When we were getting ready for the junior prom, I spoke up at a class meeting that I thought the black students should be able to ask people outside of our school to the prom. I got a rather cold reception.
The reason I mentioned it was because the year before as a sophomore I helped serve at the junior prom and it occurred to me that there really weren't that many black students that went to MCHS and that would be a problem in finding a date.
Well, in the hallway later that day or the next Alice thanked me for speaking up. That made the coldness I had felt in the gym seem a whole lot warmer. She didn't have to say anything to me. But it meant so much.
